Authorities investigate cause of Pohang bridge collapse after 13 years

Authorities in Pohang, South Korea, are investigating the collapse of the Boritdol Bridge, a pedestrian structure that crumbled just 13 years after its construction. The East Maritime Police Agency and Pohang City are collaborating with the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The bridge, which spans approximately 250 meters over the sea, was part of a larger complex developed by Pohang City in 2013 at a cost of 11.5 billion won (approximately $8.3 million USD). The bridge itself cost 2.8 billion won (approximately $2 million USD) to build. Despite not being legally required to undergo frequent inspections, the city conducted a detailed safety assessment in 2020 due to concerns about its age. This assessment resulted in a 'B' grade, with no immediate remedial actions taken.

However, a subsequent detailed safety inspection in 2024 downgraded the bridge's grade to 'C'. Following this, Pohang City carried out repairs and reinforcement work on the railings and structural components last year. Despite these efforts, a safety inspection of the observation deck in May revealed further structural risks, leading to the closure of some sections of the bridge.

On Tuesday, the bridge, which is composed of three connected sections made of steel and concrete, collapsed in its middle section, approximately 50 meters long. While 17 people were temporarily trapped, they were all safely rescued, and no injuries or fatalities were reported. Pohang City is conducting its own internal investigation into the collapse and plans to conduct emergency safety checks on coastal facilities, followed by demolition or reinforcement work.
