Autopsy may reveal clues to Lizeth Bunshi's death despite body's decomposition

The partially submerged and decomposed remains of Lizeth Bunshi, discovered on August 25, 2026, in the Machángara River in Guápulo, present a significant challenge for forensic investigators. Found 37 days after her disappearance, the advanced state of decomposition complicates the examination, yet experts believe crucial evidence may still be recoverable.

Forensic odontology has already played a vital role, with dental identification confirming the remains belong to Lizeth Bunshi. Her family recognized her braces, but the conclusive identification was made through a detailed comparison of her dental records with the findings from the autopsy. This process, which involves comparing pre-mortem dental histories with post-mortem oral examinations, can provide a unique identifier based on the shape of teeth, past treatments, and restorations.

While the Fiscalía (Prosecutor's Office) has not released the full autopsy report, the confirmation of Bunshi's identity is official. The investigation now focuses on extracting further information from the autopsy, which, according to the Organic Integral Penal Code (COIP), should detail the condition of the body, the estimated time since death, the probable means used, and the likely cause and manner of death.

Investigators are also considering the context of the discovery. The body's position, clothing, and surrounding environment are being documented. The possibility that the current was responsible for moving the body to its location is being examined, requiring analysis of the river's conditions. Maintaining the chain of custody for all recovered evidence is paramount to its admissibility in court.
