Lizeth Bunshi Case Enters New Phase After Body Found in Quito

The case of Lizeth Bunshi has entered a new phase following the discovery of her body in Quito, 37 days after she was last seen entering the Machángara river ravine with an unidentified man. The remains were located on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in the San Francisco de Miravalle area of Guápulo.

A forensic dentistry examination officially confirmed that the body belongs to the 28-year-old stylist. However, the Prosecutor's Office has yet to release details regarding the cause or mechanism of death. In response, the family's defense has announced their intention to request a reformulation of charges, specifically aiming for the case to be classified as femicide.

Preliminary examination of the body revealed external injuries, including brackets and a tattoo of a cross on her right arm, which aided in initial identification by relatives. The preliminary report also noted bruising on her left kneecap and right leg. These findings are external and do not, on their own, determine how Lizeth died or when the injuries occurred.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether Lizeth was alive when she entered the river, how long she remained in the water, or if her body was carried by the current to the Guápulo sector. These crucial details are expected to emerge from the full autopsy report, complementary forensic analyses, and the overall investigation.

Lizeth Bunshi was last seen leaving her home in El Tingo on the afternoon of July 18, 2026. Reports indicate she met with her partner and friends before an argument with her boyfriend. She then remained with Cristian Gonzalo V. L., a friend of her partner, and they traveled through various parts of Quito before the events leading to her disappearance.
