Avengers: Endgame returns to Vietnamese cinemas, aims to reclaim box-office crown

Seven years after its original release, Avengers: Endgame is preparing to return to Vietnamese cinemas in an upgraded version. Marvel will release Avengers: Endgame: Encore from September 25, alongside rereleases in North America and other markets.

The original film ran for 181 minutes. The new version will last 185 minutes, leaving audiences to wonder what Marvel has added. The new material may relate to Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to reach theaters on December 18, less than three months after Endgame returns.

Many viewers see the rerelease as a way to build interest in Doomsday. It gives audiences another chance to revisit the emotional climax that changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Joe Russo said the new Endgame scenes were filmed during production of Doomsday, suggesting that the added footage will connect the two films.

Those four minutes could therefore serve as a bridge between the franchise’s past and its next chapter. But the strategy also carries a practical question: will audiences pay to see the film again? Superhero movies no longer generate the same feverish excitement they did during the Endgame era, and Marvel may be testing whether viewers are still willing to return to its universe.

Endgame earned 280 billion Vietnamese dong in Vietnam and about $2.799 billion worldwide in 2019. It briefly overtook Avatar as the highest-grossing film in global box-office history before Avatar reclaimed the top spot with $2.92 billion. A weak rerelease could suggest that nostalgia alone is becoming less effective support for the MCU’s next phase.
