Ávila Wildfire Becomes Largest in Recent Spanish History, Devastating 50,000 Hectares

A devastating wildfire in Spain's Ávila province has escalated into the largest in the country's recent history, consuming an estimated 50,000 hectares of land. The inferno is part of a series of fires that have gripped Spain, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents from their homes.

Minister for Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen confirmed the severity of the Ávila fire, stating, "In the case of Ávila, we are talking about the largest forest fire in recent history in our country." The total area affected by fires across Ávila, Madrid, and Toledo has reached 70,000 hectares, though it remains unclear if this figure represents solely burnt land.

As of Saturday, approximately 88,500 people have been displaced due to the ongoing fires. The Community of Madrid alone has seen 29,488 people evacuated and another 21,132 confined to their homes. In Ávila province, around 30,000 people have been forced to leave, with an additional 8,000 remaining confined, particularly in the Valle del Tiétar region and areas near the fire's front.

The scale of the disaster has prompted the declaration of a national interest situation, consolidating operational command under the Military Emergencies Unit (UME). This unit is coordinating efforts involving forest firefighters, the Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, environmental agents, and personnel from various autonomous communities. The European Union has also activated its Civil Protection Mechanism, deploying four aircraft to bolster firefighting capabilities.
