Avoiding a Conflict of Interest: Lin Fang-yu Barred His Daughter from Applying to NTU Medicine, Ye Yaoyuan Tells Chiang Wan-an to Stop Hiding

A daughter of former National Taiwan University Hospital president Lin Fang-yu says her father refused to let her apply to NTU’s medical program, even though she was a strong student. She therefore gave up her application route and took the regular entrance examination instead.

Lin Chih-yun made the disclosure after NTU obstetrician Shih Ching-chung recalled a high-achieving female student he had once taught. The student identified her father only as a civil servant in the personal information submitted to the university. Shih later learned from classmates that the father was actually Lin Fang-yu, then head of NTU Hospital.

Lin Chih-yun wrote in a comment that her father had prohibited her from applying through the recommendation-based admissions process. The account has drawn attention because it contrasts with the controversy surrounding Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an’s eldest son, Chiang Te-li, who recently qualified for the Taipei Education Department’s international exchange-student program.

Professor Yeh Yao-yuan, an international studies chair professor at the University of St. Thomas in the United States, praised Lin’s conduct as a clear example of avoiding a conflict of interest. He also criticized Chiang on his Facebook page, saying, “Chiang Wan-an, keep hiding, and in the end more members of the Kuomintang will come out to criticize you.” Lin Fang-yu is himself a Kuomintang member, according to Yeh’s post.
