Awami League lacks capacity for sabotage: Bangladesh Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that the Awami League lacks the capability to carry out sabotage related to the upcoming July Mass Uprising Day. He dismissed such notions, suggesting that the group, which he described as banned and a mafia force, occasionally attempts to attract foreign attention but engages in no significant activities.

Ahmed made these remarks to reporters at the Secretariat when questioned about potential threats surrounding the August 5 commemoration. He indicated that directives for police to remain on high alert were part of standard security procedures, rather than a reaction to any concrete intelligence reports or specific threats.

Regarding the election of a new president, the minister clarified that this matter falls under the purview of the Election Commission. He also mentioned that a meeting involving his party's leadership, allies, and other political parties is scheduled for Tuesday at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend this meeting, where government plans for observing the day will be discussed.
