B.C. to provide wildfire and drought update as more than 100 fires burn

British Columbia is bracing for continued wildfire threats as officials prepare to release an update on the province's current conditions. With 102 fires actively burning, the focus is on the central Interior and Okanagan regions, where dry lightning and elevated temperatures are expected to fuel new ignitions.

Ministers of emergency management, forests, agriculture, and water, land, and resource stewardship are scheduled to speak, alongside emergency response and wildfire operations directors. Representatives from the RCMP will also be present.

The BC Wildfire Service has identified smaller fires in steep terrain as a particular concern. Wind and slope alignment in these areas could rapidly accelerate fire growth, posing a significant challenge for containment efforts. The province is also experiencing lingering high temperatures and strong winds in the Okanagan and southeastern regions, further exacerbating fire behavior.
