Back to school and an S-Bahn shutdown: How did Vienna’s public transport handle its first stress test?

Vienna’s public transport system faced its first major test on Monday morning as schools reopened and the S-Bahn main line between Hauptbahnhof and Praterstern remained closed.

The closure, which is scheduled to last until the end of October 2027, means thousands of passengers must rely on alternative services. An alternative transport plan has taken effect, including shorter intervals on tram line O near the Praterstern interchange.

The station area became noticeably busier shortly before the start of school. Commuters on their way to work shared the platforms with large numbers of children, including first-graders accompanied by proud parents and grandparents. Their colorful school cones stood out as they moved through the station.

A new wave of passengers arrived on the escalators toward the U1 and U2 lines whenever an S-Bahn train reached Praterstern. But the U-Bahn trains sometimes arrived every three minutes, allowing the station areas to empty again quickly and making room for the next passengers transferring from the S-Bahn.
