Back-to-school costs in Italy could reach 1,300 euros per student

Italian families face a potentially significant financial burden as the 2026/2027 school year approaches, with estimated costs for school supplies and textbooks reaching up to 1,300 euros per student. According to calculations by consumer association Codacons, this figure encompasses essential items like backpacks, diaries, stationery, and textbooks.

This academic year sees a notable price increase, with backpacks, diaries, and stationery experiencing average hikes between 2% and 4% compared to the previous year. Textbooks are also affected, with an estimated average price increase of 1.8%. Codacons highlights that the retail market has become increasingly complex, making it difficult for families to navigate. The association points out a stark contrast between basic items and trendy, branded products.

A basic backpack can now cost over 200 euros, while a fully equipped pencil case might reach 60 euros, and a diary could cost around 40 euros. The market also offers more expensive, high-tech options, such as backpacks with integrated LED lights, wireless speakers, and power banks. The cost escalates dramatically with luxury brands, where pencil cases can exceed 300 euros, notebooks approach 200 euros, pens cost over 500 euros, and colored pencil sets can be nearly 600 euros. Designer children's backpacks from high-fashion brands can range from 500 to 700 euros, with some models reaching and surpassing 1,000 euros, and even peaking around 1,200 euros for a single item. Opting for these luxury items can drive the total cost of school supplies to unprecedented levels.
