BAFTA-Winning Actress Penelope Keith Dies at 86

Dame Penelope Keith, a beloved British actress celebrated for her iconic roles in classic sitcoms, has died at the age of 86. Her family confirmed her peaceful passing at her home in Surrey, noting she had been living with cancer.

Keith rose to prominence as the snobbish Margo Leadbetter in "The Good Life," a sitcom that aired from 1975 and became one of Britain's most cherished comedies. She later achieved further acclaim for her portrayal of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in "To the Manor Born." The final episode of the show's first series in 1979 captivated nearly 24 million viewers, marking it as the decade's most-watched non-live television program in Britain.

Her career began on stage, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963 before transitioning to television. Early screen appearances included "The Army Game" and "The Avengers." Keith's talent was recognized with a BAFTA Television Award in 1977 for "The Good Life" and another the following year for "The Norman Conquests: Living Together." She also received an Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance in 1976.

She also served as president of the Actors' Benevolent Fund from 1989. In her later years, she returned to the stage, appearing in productions such as "Blithe Spirit." In 2014, she was appointed Dame Commander for her contributions to the arts and charity.

Fellow actors and industry figures paid tribute to Keith. Her "The Good Life" co-star Felicity Kendal described her as "a comic genius" and recalled their work together as "special times." BBC Comedy director Jon Petrie also lauded Keith's enduring legacy.
