Ball from Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal to be auctioned, estimated to fetch millions

A significant piece of soccer history is heading to auction in the United States this month: the ball with which Argentinian legend Diego Maradona scored his infamous "Hand of God" goal during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England.

Heritage Auctions, based in Texas, will host the auction from August 21 to 23. The auction house anticipates that the ball will command a price well over $10 million, starting with an initial bid of $2.5 million. This valuation places the ball among potentially record-breaking sports memorabilia.

The "Hand of God" goal, scored in Argentina's 2-1 victory, remains one of the most controversial and memorable moments in World Cup history. Maradona famously described the goal as being scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." Argentina went on to win the World Cup that year.

This upcoming auction follows the record-setting sale of the jersey Maradona wore during that same 1986 match. That iconic jersey was previously acquired for $9.3 million, establishing a new world record for football apparel.
