Baltic EU Commissioners Warn of Worsening Security, Increased Russian Provocations

European Union Commissioners representing the Baltic states have formally alerted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to a deteriorating security environment, citing increased Russian provocations.

The document was signed by EU Commissioners Kaja Kallas, Andrius Kubilius, and Valdis Dombrovskis, who represent Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, respectively. Representatives from Poland and Finland also signed the letter.

This warning follows reports from "The Wall Street Journal" in early August, which, citing U.S. intelligence, suggested Russia might attempt a limited incursion that autumn to test NATO's unity. Anonymous Baltic diplomats confirmed to RFE/RL that they had received further intelligence over the summer regarding planned Russian "false flag" operations. However, they noted no signs of an imminent conventional military attack.

Diplomats also highlighted that such operations could extend beyond the Baltic region. Recent events in several NATO countries, including Germany, Poland, and Slovakia, where Russia has been suspected or accused of involvement in attempted assassinations, arson, and drone incursions, lend credence to these concerns.
