Baltic Sea: Blue-green algae spread along coasts and in lakes

Extensive blue-green algae blooms are currently affecting the Baltic Sea and numerous lakes in the German states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein. Satellite imagery captured by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency clearly shows large algae mats along the coastlines, stretching from Rostock to Hiddensee and reaching as far as the Danish coast.

The presence of these algae is recognizable by a bluish-green cloudiness in the water, streaks, surface mats, or cloud-like distributions. The specific locations where these accumulations form are dependent on wind and weather conditions and can change rapidly, sometimes within a few hours.

In response to the widespread blooms, the Schwerin Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory. Residents and tourists are strongly urged to avoid areas where visible algae accumulations are present. While the algae can pose health risks, the ministry's advice focuses on avoiding direct contact with the affected water bodies.
