Health Advice Issued for Residents Near German Forest Fire

A significant forest fire has erupted in the Düren district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, engulfing several hundred hectares of woodland since Thursday afternoon. Thick plumes of smoke are rising into the sky from the fire, located on the outskirts of the Hürtgenwald municipality.

Local authorities are issuing crucial health advice to residents in the affected areas to minimize risks associated with the smoke and airborne ash particles. The primary recommendation is to immediately go indoors and close all windows and doors upon noticing smoke. Ventilation systems should be switched to recirculation mode. Special caution is advised for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with respiratory or heart conditions.

For essential outdoor activities in smoke-affected zones, residents are urged to wear an FFP2 mask to reduce inhalation of toxic particles. Physical activity should be confined to indoors; outdoor play on playgrounds is discouraged for children. The advice extends to avoiding strenuous exercise outside when smoke is visible or strongly smelled.

Authorities are also addressing concerns about ash settling on surfaces. Residents are advised to wet down ash before sweeping to prevent it from becoming airborne and to wash hands thoroughly afterward. Pet owners should keep their animals indoors and ensure their food and water are not contaminated with ash. If pets exhibit symptoms like coughing or watery eyes, a veterinarian should be consulted.

Regarding produce from gardens, authorities recommend thorough washing and peeling of fruits and vegetables. If significant ash accumulation is present, consumption is strongly advised against. The use of rainwater collected in barrels or cisterns for watering plants is also discouraged due to potential ash contamination; tap water is considered safe.
