Baltic states to form joint anti-drone defense force

Nations bordering the Baltic Sea are preparing to create a unified force dedicated to defending against drone threats. This move comes as concerns escalate over hybrid warfare tactics and acts of sabotage impacting vital infrastructure across the region.

Germany's Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, announced the initiative ahead of a meeting in northern Germany. He stated that the primary goal is to develop a system for swift information sharing and coordinated action in response to security threats. Dobrindt warned that hybrid attacks pose a persistent danger and could intensify in the coming months.

The decision follows numerous incidents investigated in the Baltic Sea area in recent years, including suspected damage to undersea cables and gas pipelines. The region holds significant strategic importance, bordered by eight NATO member states and Russia. Germany has heightened its security measures, particularly after a drone carrying explosives was discovered near Leipzig/Halle airport in early August.
