Bandits Kill Niger Village Head, Four Others in Fresh Attack

The village head of Galla in Niger State, Ahmed Yusuf, and four other residents were killed in a brutal attack by suspected bandits. The traditional ruler was reportedly killed inside his palace, according to sources close to the incident. The assailants also abducted an unspecified number of people, adding to the growing fear in the Borgu Local Government Area.

This latest violence has amplified concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Borgu. The attack occurred just days after suspected terrorists targeted several communities in the same area. Premium Times reported that attackers stormed a mosque in Kpenya during Friday prayers, abducting numerous worshippers. In response, the Niger State Government has directed security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and restore order.

Sources suggest the village head may have been targeted after he previously warned suspected bandits to stay away from his community. This warning was allegedly perceived as a challenge by the criminals, leading to the fatal attack on the traditional ruler. The circumstances surrounding the killing are still being investigated, but the deceased was a retired army master warrant officer and related to prominent government figures.

The incident is the latest in a string of violent events plaguing Borgu and areas around Kainji Lake. In August, nine bodies were recovered near the Wawa-Lumma road after bandits attacked travelers. Earlier, in June, suspected terrorists attacked Pissa, resulting in deaths, abductions, and arson. Residents report that repeated attacks have forced many to flee their homes, creating a humanitarian crisis.

Authorities have deployed a joint security operation to assess the situation, track the perpetrators, and secure the release of abducted worshippers. However, as of the time of reporting, the latest attack on Galla had not been officially confirmed by authorities.
