Bangladesh Politician Jailed Over Remarks on Prime Minister

Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, a recently suspended politician from the National Citizen Party (NCP), has been sent to jail in Bogura, Bangladesh, following a case filed over alleged derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on social media. The decision was made by Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hasan of the Bogura Sadar Cognisance Court.

Tanvir was arrested by police in Dhaka early Tuesday morning and subsequently produced before the court. The case was filed on August 2 by Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel, president of the Bogura Sadar Upazila BNP unit, under the Cyber Security Act 2026. Rubel accused Tanvir of making defamatory Facebook posts targeting the prime minister.

According to the case statement, the alleged defamatory posts were made on July 29. Tanvir, then an NCP central leader, reportedly posted content about recent attacks in Sylhet that he claimed defamed the prime minister. The statement further alleges that Tanvir published another provocative post shortly after, repeating similar insinuations.

Following the social media activity, the NCP's central executive committee suspended Tanvir from his position as joint member secretary and issued him a show-cause notice on July 31. The legal proceedings now place Tanvir in jail as the case progresses.
