Bangladesh's digital education push: Why Chromebooks trump tablets for schools

Bangladesh's push to digitize its education system includes a government initiative to provide digital devices to teachers, a move lauded as commendable. However, an alternative approach focusing on school-wide Chromebook deployment is proposed as more effective, sustainable, and beneficial for the nation.

The current plan, which aims to provide individual tablets to teachers, could be significantly improved by adopting a model where schools receive shared Chromebooks. This strategy has proven successful in numerous institutions across the United States, Australia, and Europe. In these settings, Chromebooks function as shared educational resources, enabling both teachers and students to benefit from digital technology. This transforms the entire school into a digital learning environment, rather than confining technology to individual users.

Implementing a Chromebook program in Bangladesh could involve gradually equipping each secondary school with 100 devices. These could be allocated to teachers during simultaneous classes and shared among students for group activities. With three students sharing each device, approximately 240 students could engage in technology-enhanced learning concurrently. This shared model ensures that a single device serves multiple users, offering a greater educational and social return on investment compared to individual tablets.

Economically, Chromebooks offer a sound investment, with costs comparable to tablets. The potential for local manufacturing presents further advantages. Collaborating with international tech companies to assemble or produce Chromebooks in Bangladesh, potentially at the Kaliakair Hi-Tech Park, could reduce foreign currency spending, generate employment, and bolster the nation's technology sector. This initiative could also contribute to building a robust digital economy in the long term. Furthermore, Chromebooks are considered more suitable for teachers' professional duties than tablets.
