Banjarbaru's Sasirangan Batik Aims for Global Market with Natural Dyes

The city government of Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, is actively working to enhance the competitiveness of its flagship product, sasirangan batik, by focusing on natural dyes. A recent design competition for sasirangan with natural colors was organized to stimulate innovation among local artisans and broaden the market reach for these environmentally friendly textiles, aligning with the growing global demand for sustainable fashion.

The competition, held at MESS L Banjarbaru, served as a platform for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) to showcase contemporary sasirangan designs based on natural colorants. This initiative merges the preservation of local cultural heritage with the demands of the modern fashion industry, which increasingly prioritizes sustainable and eco-friendly products.

Marhain Rahman, an expert staff member for legal and political affairs to the Banjarbaru Mayor, stated that the local government is committed to strengthening the sasirangan industry ecosystem through guidance, training, and events like this competition. He emphasized that sasirangan must retain its traditional values while adapting to modern market tastes. The event provides a space for creative industry players to innovate, boost the competitiveness of local products, and reinforce Banjarbaru's cultural identity.

Rahman highlighted the strategic importance of using natural dyes, noting that they not only produce aesthetically pleasing products but also meet consumer demand for environmentally conscious production processes.
