Bank Staff, Police Foil NT$490,000 Renovation Scam in Taipei

Liberty Times reports on a successful intervention by bank staff and police in Taipei that prevented a significant fraud. A woman, identified only by her surname Zhang, was on the verge of handing over NT$490,000 after being targeted by scammers.

The woman approached a bank to withdraw the large sum, claiming it was for home renovations. However, the bank teller, trained to spot potential fraud, became suspicious and immediately contacted the police. Officers from the Tianmu Police Station arrived promptly and questioned Ms. Zhang. When she couldn't provide specific details about the supposed renovations or any supporting documentation, the police quickly deduced she was likely falling victim to a common 'fake investment' or 'fake police' scam.

Through careful explanation of typical scam tactics and sharing past cases, the officers managed to convince Ms. Zhang that she was being targeted. She ultimately abandoned the withdrawal, saving her money. The police used this incident to reiterate warnings about prevalent scams, emphasizing that fraudsters often use pretexts like home renovations, luxury goods purchases, or down payments for property to trick victims. They urged the public to adhere to the 'listen, hang up, verify' principle and to contact the anti-fraud hotline (165) or local police if they have any doubts.
