BARMM polls: Group opposes alleged militarization of ‘historic vote’

A civil society group has challenged the alleged militarization of the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, calling the vote a “historic democratic” exercise.

The United Coalition of Civic Organizations, Ulama, and Professionals and Youth of Lanao expressed its opposition in a letter sent one week before the elections.

The group’s statement places the security presence around the landmark BARMM vote under scrutiny as voters prepare to elect the region’s first parliament.
