Barranquilla activates aid collection center for earthquake victims in Colombia

Barranquilla has established a humanitarian aid collection center to support those affected by a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that jolted much of Colombia on Monday. While the city of Barranquilla reported no structural damage or emergencies resulting from the tremor, authorities initiated preventive measures, including the evacuation of several buildings.

The earthquake's epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, Chocó. Some residents in Barranquilla, particularly in the northern and central sectors, reported feeling the seismic activity lightly. However, officials confirmed that no structural damage or related emergencies have arisen within the city.

As a precautionary measure aligned with established protocols, the district administration ordered the preventive evacuation of various buildings. These included the main headquarters of the Barranquilla Mayor's Office, the Manzur Tower housing Fiscalía offices, the Salud Total building, and the headquarters of the Governorate of Atlántico. Fernando Fiorillo, head of the District Office for Risk Management, emphasized that these actions are driven by prevention criteria and are not based on reports of damage.

The newly opened collection center is situated at Carrera 43 #6-120 in the Barranquillita sector. It will operate around the clock, receiving and organizing donations. The collected humanitarian aid will be managed by the District Office for Risk Management before being dispatched to the regions most impacted by the earthquake. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge citizens to remain calm and rely solely on official information channels.
