Earthquake in Antioquia: 40 municipalities affected, one dead from falling rock; governors offer aid

Antioquia is reporting a state of calm following a significant earthquake on August 10th, which impacted 40 municipalities across the department. While infrastructure largely held up, a 73-year-old man in Támesis tragically lost his life due to a falling rock, according to Governor Andrés Julián Rendón.

"With sorrow, I report the death of an inhabitant of Támesis. The man, 73 years old, died as a product of a rockslide. We send a message of solidarity to his family and to all the people of this beautiful municipality in the Southwest of the Department," Rendón stated on social media.

The earthquake caused damage to infrastructure in 40 municipalities. Fifteen educational institutions are undergoing structural evaluations, five hospital facilities sustained damage, one road in Titiribí was affected, and 54 homes were damaged. Several churches also reported cracks.

Governor Rendón has been in contact with national authorities, reporting general tranquility in Antioquia. He has offered the rescue capabilities of Medellín and Envigado, along with the departmental hospital network, to assist other departments, specifically extending this offer to the governors of Chocó, Risaralda, and Caldas. Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) confirmed that its services, including water, sewage, gas, and electricity, are operating normally. Crucially, the Hidroituango power plant sustained no structural damage, ensuring continued energy supply.
