Băsescu Mocks PSD Over Unconstitutional Integrity Law Amendment

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has strongly criticized a recent amendment proposed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to the law concerning the integrity of elected officials. Băsescu declared the amendment unconstitutional, suggesting it was crafted to target a single individual. He argued that the contested text violates fundamental constitutional principles by referencing situations that occurred before the law's adoption.

Speaking on B1 TV, Băsescu stated, "It is unconstitutional. A law for one person, plus it targets an activity that happened before. It's not a law that targets if something happens, but something that has happened... It is absolutely ridiculous from a constitutional standpoint, and any high school graduate would tell you it's unconstitutional."

Băsescu also commented on the controversial manner in which the amendment was introduced into the legislative project, without public debate or acknowledgment. "It's the PSD's style," he remarked. He suggested the initiative stems from the political rivalry between the PSD and the Save Romania Union (USR), implying the PSD sought to undermine the USR. "They don't like the USR, and they thought that by hitting them like this, they would solve the problem or get revenge. It is not right to initiate unconstitutional amendments by dragging the Constitution into political battles," the former president added.

Confident that the law will not be enacted in its current form, Băsescu's statements follow the USR's announcement of a criminal complaint regarding the amendment's appearance in the Legal Committee's report. The President of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean, has since announced the resubmission of the ANI law project to Parliament, excluding the contested provisions, describing the new project as "pro-transparency" and constitutional.
