Basketball player Miikka Muurinen fined for speeding without a valid licence

Finnish basketball prospect Miikka Muurinen has been fined €872 after police caught him driving at 76 kph in a 40-kph zone in Helsinki without the required licence.

A May 28 penalty order imposed 28 day-fines, each worth €29, for endangering traffic safety and driving a vehicle without authorisation. He must also pay a €60 victim surcharge. The fine amount corresponds to estimated net monthly earnings of about €2,000.

Police recorded the speed on Mäkelänkatu on the afternoon of May 11. After a 3-kph safety deduction, the case document said the road was dry and traffic was normal. One passenger was in the car.

Muurinen presented a US driving licence that had expired in September 2025. Prosecutors therefore concluded that he did not hold the driving entitlement required in Finland. He was not given a driving ban because he is not a licence holder, meaning he has no valid Finnish driving licence.

The registration number in the penalty order identified the vehicle as a Land Rover Range Rover owned by a finance company. Muurinen, 19, played for Partizan Belgrade last season before leaving the club in mid-February. He was also part of Finland’s team that finished fourth at the 2025 European Championships and will play for the University of Arkansas in the coming season.
