Battery Giants Vie for Honam's Growing Energy Storage Market

South Korea's leading battery manufacturers, SK On, Samsung SDI, and LG Energy Solution, are escalating their competition in the energy storage system (ESS) market, with a particular focus on the Honam region. This strategic push is driven by the increasing demand for grid stability amidst the expansion of solar power generation.

South Jeolla Province, a part of the Honam region, has emerged as a critical hub for ESS deployment. It accounts for 93% of the volumes from the first two central contract markets (bidding markets) for ESS, necessitated by the concentration of solar power facilities. These facilities generate power primarily during daylight hours, creating a need for storage solutions to manage surplus energy and control output.

Further fueling the demand is the government's initiative to establish semiconductor production bases in the southwestern region and build AI data centers across five major areas, including Honam. This ambitious project, part of the '3 Big Mega Projects for Korea's Leap Forward,' is expected to significantly increase the need for stable power supply and, consequently, ESS.

The domestic ESS market represents a crucial new avenue for South Korean battery companies. Facing slowing electric vehicle demand and intensified price competition from Chinese firms in Europe, ESS offers a potential growth driver. SK On, for instance, views ESS not just as a supplementary market to EV batteries but as a distinct growth pillar, setting an annual order target of 20 GWh. Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution are also actively securing contracts and developing projects within the region, highlighting the strategic importance of Honam in their future plans.
