Battle of Kermt re-enactment takes drought precautions, staging shows on greenest meadow

The organizers of the Battle of Kermt re-enactment are taking enhanced safety measures to combat the risks posed by the current drought. This weekend, approximately 180 volunteers will bring the 1831 battle between Belgians and the Dutch back to life near the Herkenrode Abbey.

All spectacles will be performed, but always on the same site to limit the risk. It's a meadow that lies in a very wet part of the area.

To mitigate fire hazards, all demonstrations, including musket firings that produce small amounts of gunpowder smoke, will be confined to a single location. This specific meadow has been chosen because it remains green and moist, unlike other areas affected by the dry conditions. The actors shoot with replicas of musket weapons, with very small amounts of gunpowder. People will hear a bang and see some smoke, but the risk is really limited.

In addition to the controlled performance area, a 10,000-liter water tank equipped with a fire hose will be on standby for rapid intervention. Eight safety personnel will also be present to monitor the event. Leenaerts emphasized the experience of the volunteers but expressed concern about visitors, particularly regarding the careless disposal of cigarettes. The organization is appealing to attendees to avoid smoking on the premises.
