Bauxite Downstreaming Investment Surpasses Nickel in Indonesia

Indonesia's push for downstream investment has seen a significant shift, with bauxite unseating nickel as the leading commodity for realized downstream investment in the second quarter of 2026. This marks a first for the nation's resource processing sector, driven by a surge in the construction of bauxite processing and refining facilities.

Investment in bauxite downstream activities reached Rp 40.1 trillion in Q2 2026, a substantial 193 percent increase from the previous quarter's Rp 13.7 trillion. This surge propelled bauxite to the top of national downstream investment rankings, overtaking nickel, which has long been the dominant commodity. Minister of Investment and Head of BKPM, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, noted that this change reflects a more balanced development of the national downstream program, moving beyond a sole reliance on the nickel industry.

The increased investment in bauxite is directly linked to the construction of smelters, undertaken by both domestic and foreign investors. One key project is the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase I in West Kalimantan, a joint venture by MIND ID Group, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM), and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM). This facility is designed to produce 1 million tons of alumina annually, requiring approximately 3.3 million tons of bauxite.

This development is viewed positively by lawmakers. Eddy Soeparno, a member of Commission XII of the DPR RI, welcomed the sharp increase in smelter investments for bauxite, acknowledging that the sector had previously lagged behind nickel. The overall realization of downstream investments in Q2 2026 reached Rp 152.7 trillion, a 5.7 percent increase year-on-year, contributing significantly to the national investment realization.
