Bavaria's Gäubodenfest Kicks Off with Parade Amidst Enhanced Security

Straubing, Germany – The Gäubodenfest, a beloved and expansive folk festival in Bavaria, has officially kicked off in Straubing. The celebration began Friday evening with a vibrant traditional costume parade. Thousands of spectators lined the approximately two-kilometer route through the city center to the festival grounds, enjoying the festive atmosphere complete with decorated horse-drawn carriages, brass music, and traditional attire.

The weather offered a pleasant start, with temperatures just under 30 degrees Celsius after a period of intense heat. Many attendees secured prime viewing spots well in advance of the parade.

Unlike some other Bavarian festivals, Gäubodenfest does not feature a ceremonial tapping of the first beer keg. This tradition was reportedly dropped in the 1950s by a former mayor out of respect for Munich's Oktoberfest. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday morning, with Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alois Rainer, set to deliver a speech.

Authorities are prioritizing safety during the "fifth season," as the festival is known locally. Police have announced an increased presence, selective checks, and the use of video surveillance. They have stated that troublemakers will not be tolerated and may face entry bans for the duration of the festival. Such bans have already been issued to six individuals prior to the event. Police are also reminding festival-goers about strict alcohol limits, emphasizing that they apply to e-scooters as well as cars, with significant penalties for violations.
