A key contest is the race for the state chairmanship. Incumbent leader Stephan Protschka, also a member of the Bundestag, faces a challenge from fellow Bundestag member Reinhard Mixl. Both candidates have assembled teams comprising members from both the federal and state parliaments. The outcome of the election is considered uncertain within the party, potentially hinging on which candidate can mobilize more supporters to attend despite the current heatwave.

Behind the scenes, a fierce power struggle is reportedly underway, contrasting with public calls for unity from Protschka and Mixl. Tensions have surfaced, including a letter from Protschka's team to the federal AfD leadership alleging an "attempt by external networks to hijack the free decision-making of our strongest state association." Protschka has also claimed to be facing pressure and threats.

In parallel, several counter-demonstrations against the AfD convention have been registered in Passau. Organizers anticipate approximately 5,000 protesters. The largest demonstration, with an estimated 2,000 participants, is planned to take place directly in front of the Dreiländerhalle. Authorities are increasing police presence to ensure the safety of attendees and residents. A no-fly zone, including drones, has been established around the venue for Saturday.
