Bayern fail to score for first time in 59 matches after Schalke draw

Bayern Munich’s extraordinary scoring streak ended at 59 matches when newly promoted Schalke held the Bundesliga champions to a goalless draw in Gelsenkirchen.

Luis Díaz had Bayern’s clearest chances. He fired wide after going one-on-one with goalkeeper Loris Karius, then tried to chip him after halftime, only for the effort to be cleared before it crossed the line.

Vincent Kompany had rotated his team after Bayern’s strong start to the season, leaving Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench. Bayern controlled possession in the first half but struggled to create clear chances. Kane came on at halftime, while Olise and Jamal Musiala entered with 35 minutes remaining as Bayern increased the pressure.

Musiala was making his first appearance of the season after suffering seizures during two pre-season matches. His arrival helped Bayern look more dangerous late on. Konrad Laimer sliced a close-range effort into the side-netting, while Karius produced a fingertip save to keep out Kane’s drive toward the top corner.

Schalke’s disciplined defence survived the late pressure to secure a valuable point and its first of the season. The result also ended Bayern’s run of finishing a Bundesliga matchday top of the table, which had lasted 67 matchdays. Kane, making his 96th Bundesliga appearance, remains two goals short of 100. Bayern next face Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League before travelling to Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg on September 13.
