Bayern Munich poised for another dominant Bundesliga season as rivals rebuild

As Jürgen Klopp prepares to return to the Bundesliga as Germany coach, the league's predictable outcome is a stark contrast to his previous era. Bayern Munich is widely expected to dominate the upcoming season, securing their 11th consecutive title and 14th in 15 years. This dominance often overshadows domestic competition, with Bayern treating the league as a mere warm-up for the Champions League.

"The battle for starting spots at FC Bayern is more exciting than the race for the German championship," noted former West Germany great Lothar Matthäus. He predicts Vincent Kompany's team will win the league by over 10 points. The only recent challenge to Bayern's supremacy came from Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten league and cup double in 2024. However, Leverkusen, like Klopp's former club Dortmund, is in a rebuilding phase after unprecedented success under Xabi Alonso.

Stuttgart, under coach Sebastian Hoeneß, appears to be the most stable of Bayern's rivals. Yet, the significant gap in class and resources makes another title challenge unlikely. Bayern demonstrated their superiority by routing Stuttgart 3-0 in the German Cup final in May, with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick to reach 61 goals for the season. Kane will be eager to start the new season strong when Stuttgart visits Munich for the opener.

Bayern's own squad has been further bolstered. Morocco forward Ismael Saibari has joined from PSV Eindhoven, adding depth to an attack that already features Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz. Germany defender Nathaniel Brown has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt and has already provided cover in midfield, with Saibari recovering from an injury sustained in the World Cup. The club also finalized the transfer of Senegalese teenager Bara Sapoko Ndiaye from Gambia All Stars, a promising 18-year-old midfielder expected to see more playing time following Leon Goretzka's departure. Jamal Musiala is set to return after a broken leg sidelined him for much of last season, though his recovery from a neurological issue that caused him to collapse during warmup games remains a point of attention.

Meanwhile, Dortmund's extensive rebuilding began before summer. New sporting director Ole Book, who arrived in March, faces the daunting task of revamping a squad in dire need of change. He has been active, bringing in attacking midfielders Konstantinos Karetsas, Joey Vermaan, and Giannis Konstantelias from Genk, PSV, and PAOK, respectively. These new additions are intended to replace key departures like Karim Adeyemi, who moved to Barcelona, and Julian Brandt.
