'Be Silent, Don't Object, and You'll Be in the System': LKL Referee Resigns Amid Criticism

Olegas Barkovskij, a seasoned referee in the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), has stepped down from his duties, citing deep-seated issues within the country's basketball administration. In a public social media post, Barkovskij described the Lithuanian basketball system as increasingly closed and autocratic, where power is concentrated in the hands of a select few.

Barkovskij, who has spent approximately 20 years involved in Lithuanian basketball, expressed concern that individuals often fear voicing their true opinions. He believes that speaking out against perceived flaws can lead to negative consequences, potentially jeopardizing one's position within the system. This fear, he argues, stifles open discussion and prevents necessary improvements.

A significant point of contention for Barkovskij is the stagnation of referee compensation. He noted that LKL referees' salaries have remained virtually unchanged since 2016. This lack of adjustment, he contends, is particularly problematic given the substantial changes in prices, the economy, and inflation over the past decade, which have eroded the real value of their earnings.

Beyond financial concerns, Barkovskij lamented a culture where criticism is often perceived as disloyalty rather than an opportunity for growth. He observed that many within the basketball community privately acknowledge these systemic problems but remain silent publicly. He warned that if leadership fails to adapt and improve the system, Lithuanian basketball as a whole will eventually suffer the consequences.
