Bear dies after climbing utility pole in New Mexico; rescue efforts hampered

A startling scene unfolded in New Mexico as a black bear was discovered clinging to the top of a utility pole near U.S. Highway 56. Viral images showed the distressed animal struggling to maintain its balance on the narrow crossbar, gasping for air.

One witness, driving with her family, initially mistook the dark shape for a deceased bear before realizing the animal was alive and in grave danger. After reporting the incident, authorities were alerted, but the bear's high position presented a rescue challenge. Officials noted that tranquilizing the bear could risk a fatal fall.

Despite efforts to reach the animal, it ultimately died from electrocution before rescuers could implement a plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior shared the footage, humorously noting, "We appreciate the enthusiasm for American Energy Dominance, but this isn't what we meant." Wildlife experts explained that startled bears sometimes climb utility poles, mistaking them for trees to escape threats. A similar incident occurred in Arizona in 2021, where a bear was safely rescued, but this New Mexico case ended tragically.
