Bees: Guardians of the Mangroves

In Panama’s Pacific mangroves, Africanized bees are taking on a new role. Often kept at a distance because of their reputation, the bees could become allies for coastal communities.

The initiative brings together science, technology and sustainability to show that the insects can produce honey while also supporting mangrove conservation.

For communities along Panama’s Pacific coast, the project presents the bees not only as a potential source of income, but also as part of efforts to protect the mangrove environment.
