Bekasi cafe offers mystical vibes and digital detox with no Wi-Fi

In Bekasi, Indonesia, a unique cafe named Ngangsu offers an unconventional experience, blending a "klenik" (mystical) ambiance with an intimate setting, all deliberately without Wi-Fi. This hidden gem aims to stand out from the typical minimalist cafe trend by providing a distinctly different vibe.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted not by a friendly barista, but by one acting like a "dukun" (shaman). The menu ordering process is framed as an interactive spiritual consultation, infused with humor. The cafe's location in Jatiasih, Bekasi, is enhanced by its mystical decor, including replicas of "pocong" (shrouded ghosts) and "kuntilanak" (vampire ghosts) placed strategically. Seating is spread across the yard and a dimly lit garden, creating a serene, romantic, and atmospheric outdoor dining experience.

Established in March 2026 by Benedictus Cleo Werdi and two partners, Ngangsu's concept was born from a need to compete with larger cafes despite limited capital. They drew inspiration from the traditional Javanese "Kejawen" atmosphere found in areas like Imogiri and Yogyakarta's royal environment. Even the cafe's huts are designed using earthquake-resistant architecture popular in Yogyakarta after the 2006 earthquake. Ngangsu boldly introduces new flavors through spiced coffee and authentic Javanese dishes like "ayam bacem" (braised chicken), aiming to cultivate a market rather than follow existing trends.

Embracing a "digital detox" philosophy, Ngangsu intentionally omits Wi-Fi and power outlets. This deliberate choice encourages patrons to engage in face-to-face conversations and build personal connections, free from the distraction of smartphones. The management treats customers like close friends or family, fostering a welcoming and communal atmosphere.
