Belgian club beat Barca to Ikorodu City’s Omotayo

Belgian Pro League club Zulte Waregem has secured the signing of Nigerian teenage winger Maliq Omotayo from Ikorodu City, fending off interest from several European clubs, including Spanish giants Barcelona. The transfer was finalized after Omotayo successfully passed his medical examinations, according to transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri.

The 18-year-old winger became eligible to sign a professional contract in Europe upon reaching the age of majority on Monday, August 17. Zulte Waregem had been tracking Omotayo's development at Ikorodu City before inviting him for a trial in Belgium, where his performances convinced the coaching staff to offer him a contract.

While Barcelona had also expressed interest and planned to assess Omotayo during summer trials, Zulte Waregem acted swiftly to secure his signature. Omotayo leaves Ikorodu City after a notable breakthrough season in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League, where he recorded one goal and one assist in nine appearances. He also played a key role in the club's run to the President Federation Cup final.

Omotayo, who honed his skills at Lagos-based Imperial FC, is expected to initially join Jong Essevee, Zulte Waregem's U23 team. This move is seen as a significant step in his career, providing him with an opportunity to continue his development in Europe and adapt to Belgian football before aiming for a place in the senior squad.
