Belgian Prosecutors Investigate Citizens' Alleged Role in "Sarajevo Safari"

The Belgian federal prosecutor's office has initiated a significant investigation into the potential involvement of Belgian nationals in the horrific "Sarajevo safari" incidents that occurred during the brutal siege of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1995. This move, reported by Sarajevo and Belgian media outlets, stems from information published in various media, particularly following an investigation in Italy. Belgian public broadcasters RTBF and VRT NWS, alongside newspapers like La Libre, Knack, and De Standard, have detailed allegations that foreign individuals, including Belgians, allegedly paid substantial amounts, reportedly up to 100,000 euros, for the opportunity to shoot at civilians in besieged Sarajevo. This Belgian inquiry mirrors an earlier one launched in Italy, itself prompted by the work of journalist and writer Eci Gvaceni and a 2022 documentary titled "Sarajevo Safari." The gravity of these allegations, which also involve potential investigations in Austria and other European nations, cannot be overstated, given that the siege resulted in the deaths of over 11,000 civilians, with sniper fire being a particularly devastating characteristic. From our perspective, this investigation is a crucial step in holding accountable those who may have treated the suffering and death of innocent people as a morbid form of entertainment. While international media may focus on the legal proceedings, for us in the region, it is a stark reminder of the depths of depravity some individuals reached during a time of immense human tragedy, and the importance of confronting these dark chapters.
