Belgium faces third heatwave as summer temperatures approach record highs

Belgium is currently grappling with its third heatwave of the summer, pushing temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius in several locations. The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (IRM) officially declared the new heatwave, noting that the center of the country has seen consecutive days above 25 degrees, including at least three days over 30 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to remain high through Sunday or Monday, with a possibility of precipitation afterward. This summer is shaping up to be one of the hottest in Belgian history. If current forecasts hold, the average summer temperature could reach 20.4 degrees Celsius, exceeding the previous record of 19.8 degrees set in 2018.

This pattern of extreme heat and scarce rainfall has put a strain on water resources, particularly in several municipalities in the southern region of Wallonia. These areas are now under surveillance for potential pressure on water supply.

While water supply cuts have not yet occurred, local authorities have launched public awareness campaigns urging residents to conserve water. They have also deployed water tanker trucks as a precautionary measure to support distribution if needed.
