Belgium's Voluntary Military Service Program Draws Thousands of Applicants

Belgium's innovative voluntary military service program has seen an overwhelming response, with 3,248 individuals applying for just 500 available spots in the inaugural recruitment drive. The program offers participants a one-year term of service with a monthly net income of approximately 2,000 euros (about $3,300 USD).

The training for the first reservists is scheduled to begin in August. They will learn basic military skills such as map reading, tactics, and first aid.

This initiative, targeting young people aged 18-25, is designed to expand the country's military and reserve forces. The government views it as a strategic shift towards a volunteer-based system, moving away from traditional conscription. Roughly 80% of applicants are male, and 20% are female.

Selected participants will undergo basic military training, covering skills such as map reading, tactics, and first aid, and can choose to serve in the army, air force, or navy. Belgium's "Defense Strategy Vision 2025" outlines plans to significantly increase military personnel, reserve forces, and civilian staff by 2035, with the voluntary program expected to recruit around 1,000 individuals annually.

Not all soldiers need to meet the same very strict physical standards. We will apply different physical examination standards depending on the job.

Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder has indicated that physical fitness standards will be adapted to specific roles, acknowledging that not all military positions require the same stringent criteria. However, demanding roles like F-35 fighter pilots will maintain high standards. The maximum age for reservists has also been raised to 67 to incorporate individuals with diverse civilian experience. The minister reiterated that mandatory conscription is not currently being considered.

Reintroducing mandatory service is not an option at the moment. Considering the size of the army and facilities, it is difficult to reintroduce mandatory service for all young people.
