Belgrano crowned Argentine champion after thrilling final against River Plate

Belgrano de Córdoba has been crowned champion of the Argentine Apertura, etching another historic chapter in the club's annals with a thrilling 3-2 victory over River Plate at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Belgrano twice coming from behind to secure the title. This triumph is particularly sweet, as River Plate was the same rival Belgrano famously relegated in 2011. This time, however, the stakes were different, with the championship securing Belgrano immediate entry into the 2027 Copa Libertadores – their first-ever appearance in the prestigious tournament – and a spot in the Trofeo de Campeones final.

Beyond the Libertadores qualification, the championship opens doors to a potential cascade of further titles. The winner of the Trofeo de Campeones will automatically qualify for the Supercopa Internacional, facing the "Liga Champion" (currently Independiente Rivadavia). Additionally, the Trofeo de Campeones victor earns a spot in the Supercopa Argentina, where they will play the winner of the Copa Argentina. There's even a chance to compete in the Recopa de Campeones, a triangular tournament featuring winners of the Supercopa Internacional, Supercopa Argentina, and Copa Argentina.

With this latest trophy, Belgrano adds to its legacy in Argentine football. The historical ranking of champions sees Boca Juniors at the top with 74 titles, closely followed by River Plate with 72, and Independiente with 45. Racing is also closing in on its rival with 41 titles, while Alumni and San Lorenzo complete the top five with 22 crowns each.
