Beloved 'Maire' sculpture in Pori gets a facelift after years of hugs

A cherished public sculpture in Pori, Finland, known as Maire, is receiving a much-needed restoration due to the affectionate wear it has sustained from countless hugs. The bronze artwork, installed in Eetunaukio square, has developed noticeable abrasions on its face, knees, and hands over the years from people interacting closely with it.

Created by ceramicist and visual artist Kerttu Horila in 2010, Maire is considered one of Pori's most beloved public art pieces. Its location on a busy pedestrian street means it is exposed to the elements throughout the summer, contributing to its wear. During the winter months, the sculpture is moved indoors to the lobby of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, where visitors can still touch it.

Anni Venäläinen, director of the Pori Art Museum, confirmed that the sculpture is intended for interaction. "The artwork is meant to be touched," she stated. Currently, a conservator from the Pori Art Museum is undertaking minor repairs, specifically addressing paint damage on the sculpture's face. Maire is expected to return to Eetunaukio square within a few days.

Following the summer season, a more comprehensive conservation process will be carried out. This thorough treatment aims to preserve the sculpture for future enjoyment, ensuring it can be returned to its prominent spot on Pori's pedestrian street next summer. The restoration highlights the deep connection the public has with the artwork, valuing its accessibility and tactile nature.
