Ben Gvir urges Netanyahu to recognize the Falklands as ‘occupied Argentine territory’

Itamar Ben Gvir has called on Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize the Falkland Islands as “occupied Argentine territory” and sanction Britain for continuing to control them.

“It is time for the State of Israel to publicly recognize that the Falkland Islands are occupied Argentine territory, violently stolen by the British from the Argentine people,” Ben Gvir wrote in a post on X. He also accused Britain of drilling for oil in the islands and taking money from Argentina.

His appeal came as Argentina announced that it would file criminal complaints against several subsidiaries of Israeli oil company Navitas. Buenos Aires says the companies allegedly hold licenses from what it calls the illegitimate British government for oil exploration or production in the North Falkland Basin, in violation of Argentine law.

Ben Gvir, an ultranationalist minister who regards the West Bank as a fundamental part of Israel despite its status as occupied territory under the view of the international community, ended his post with a direct appeal to Netanyahu: recognize Argentina’s sovereignty over the islands and impose sanctions on Britain for as long as the occupation continues.

The comments came as British media reported that the United Kingdom was expected to announce restrictions on buying agricultural products from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Argentina has maintained its sovereignty claim since British forces occupied the islands and removed Argentine authorities and residents in 1833. The dispute later became the setting for the 1982 war, which ended with Argentina’s defeat and surrender to British forces.
