Bengaluru delivery boy abused in Hindi by girls, beaten by male friends; incident caught on cam

A 25-year-old delivery boy in Bengaluru was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse and a physical assault in the early hours of Saturday. The incident began when a group of girls reportedly hurled abuses at him in Hindi as he was returning from a delivery around 4:40 am.

The victim, Basavaraj, who works for the quick commerce delivery app Zepto, stated he did not understand Hindi and asked the girls to explain their actions in Kannada. According to the FIR, the girls then allegedly pulled his cap and attempted to attack him. Basavaraj contacted the police helpline and an acquaintance.

Subsequently, the girls allegedly summoned their male friends to the location. The group then assaulted Basavaraj physically, reportedly using a wooden stick. He sustained bleeding injuries to his back, head, and nose. When his friend Ashok arrived and tried to intervene, he was also reportedly attacked.

The Yelahanka New Town Police Station has registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Bengaluru has previously seen incidents of language-related aggression, sparking debates over linguistic respect.
