Beni schools strengthen Ebola prevention for return to class, but lack materials

As the new school year approaches in Beni, located in the North Kivu province, educational institutions are enhancing their preparations to protect students from the Ebola virus. Although some schools have already installed preventive measures, many facilities are still lacking essential materials. Reporters observed handwashing kits at the entrances of several schools, with temperature checks also planned before students enter classrooms.

"We have kits like handwashing stations. Students wash their hands first, and we will also check temperatures at the entrance each time," explained one school official. However, not all schools are adequately equipped. For instance, one institution reported having only five handwashing stations for fourteen classrooms. This shortage is a cause for concern among parents, particularly in schools with large student populations, as inadequate prevention measures could facilitate the disease's spread.

In response to these needs, education officials are actively seeking assistance from humanitarian organizations. Robert Kambale, head of the Education sub-division in Beni, urged NGOs to increase their support to schools. "We are calling on NGOs to come to our aid to protect children from this Ebola disease," he pleaded. The appeal highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring a safe learning environment in the region.
