Benue attack: Police confirm 13 killed, begin clearance operation

A deadly attack by suspected bandits in the Efeyi community of Benue State, Nigeria, has left 13 people dead and 20 cattle stolen, according to the Benue State Police Command. While residents initially reported 15 fatalities, preliminary police investigations confirmed 13 deaths. The attackers reportedly invaded the community with the primary goal of rustling cattle belonging to a local resident, Peter Ambulus.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the armed bandits invaded the community with the sole intention of rustling cattle belonging to one Peter Ambulus ‘M’, a native of the area.

As the assailants fled with the stolen cattle, they opened fire on farmers encountered in the bush, leading to the tragic loss of life. In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, led a coordinated clearance operation involving tactical teams. The operation aimed to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen livestock.

Regrettably, thirteen (13) persons lost their lives during the attack, while the hoodlums successfully rustled twenty (20) cattle.

During the ongoing operation, security operatives faced resistance from the fleeing suspects but successfully repelled them. Two suspected bandits were neutralized, and one AK-47 rifle along with fifteen rounds of ammunition were recovered. The police have assured residents that efforts are being made to restore peace and enhance security in the affected area and its surroundings, emphasizing their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
