Benue State Governor Announces Closure of IDP Camps Amidst Improved Security

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced a significant step towards normalcy, revealing plans to close some Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps due to a marked improvement in the state's security. The announcement came during a media engagement with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team.

Alia stated that enhanced security, bolstered by federal government support, has fostered a climate of relative peace. This has enabled a substantial number of displaced individuals to voluntarily return to their ancestral homes and resume farming activities. He noted that security indices are continuously monitored through deployed agencies, traditional leaders, and community residents, whose information is vital for tracking developments.

Recalling the establishment of 15 IDP camps across the state following past attacks, Governor Alia expressed optimism about the changing narrative. He confirmed that plans are underway to close some camps as occupants have begun returning to their farms. The state government is collaborating with international partners, including the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to ensure sustainable solutions for the displaced, aiming not just for their return but for the creation of conditions that guarantee their safety and ability to remain in their communities.

Beyond security, Governor Alia detailed his administration's commitment to broader development. He highlighted a state of emergency declared for road infrastructure, leading to improved connectivity. Urban renewal projects are progressing, and major roads have been reconstructed. Significant reforms are also underway in the primary education sector, with hundreds of neglected schools being rehabilitated and 9,700 teachers recruited. Healthcare facilities have been revamped, and the state teaching hospital is being upgraded to attract patients from neighboring states, underscoring a comprehensive approach to rebuilding Benue.
