BER Airport braces for 90,000 passengers on final holiday day; highways expected to be packed

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is bracing for a surge of approximately 90,000 passengers on Sunday, the final day of the summer holidays. This peak is attributed to a high volume of returning travelers eager to get home before the new school year begins.

Airport officials described the day as a "small peak," noting that higher passenger numbers are traditional at the end of vacation periods. Over the entire summer break, BER saw around 3.7 million passengers, a figure consistent with both previous forecasts and the volume recorded last year. The airport reported that operations have generally run smoothly throughout the holiday period.

Meanwhile, the end of the summer holidays is expected to cause significant congestion on German roads. The ADAC anticipates crowded highways as thousands of holidaymakers return home, compounded by weekend travelers. Traffic reports indicate slow-moving traffic on the A9 and A13 highways, with delays also reported at the border crossing between Frankfurt (Oder) and Poland.

Several construction sites and road closures are exacerbating traffic issues. Work is underway on the A15 near Forst and Frankfurt (Oder), and on the Berliner Ring between Dreieck Havelland and Dreieck Werder, as well as between Dreieck Barnim and Dreieck Spreeau. The A13 also has construction zones between Teupitz and Bugkgraben, and between Freiwalde and Lübbenau. A notable 26-hour closure at the Funkturm autobahn triangle, affecting the Halenseestraße Ost until Sunday evening, is due to the construction of a support structure for a new ring rail bridge.
