Berlin Mayor Wegner Stresses Stance at CSD Amidst Calls for Diversity

Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, marched in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, stressing the crucial need to take a clear stance in the current social climate. Speaking to the German Press Agency, the CDU politician asserted that Berlin visibly demonstrates its identity as an open city, a hub of diversity and freedom, particularly during this event.

Wegner emphasized that CSD sends a vital message against hate speech, incitement, exclusion, and societal division. He stated his belief that the parade is therefore essential for Berlin and expressed his pleasure in participating. This year marks a significant moment as the Senate is participating with its own float for the first time.

Anticipating hundreds of thousands of attendees, the event also saw a minor counter-demonstration on its periphery. Police had previously inspected about a dozen individuals from a suspected right-wing group near Potsdamer Platz. While Wegner acknowledged that counter-demonstrations are an unwelcome development, he affirmed that freedom of opinion is part of the democratic process. He concluded by noting that those who stand for diversity and cohesion form the clear majority, which he considers the decisive factor.
